Trees Forever: What Has Wandered Into Backbone Workshop

Friday, September 20, 2019 - 10:00am to 3:00pm
Backbone Golf & Country Club, 1244 400th St., Strawberry Point, IA 52076

As part of Trees Forever's “What Has Wandered Into Your Woods?” series, join in a hands-on workshop at Backbone Golf and Country Club and Backbone State Park. This series was created to help landowners learn and cope with the threat of invasive species, which are hurting the health of our native ecosystem and woodlands. This includes lessons on plant identification and technics on invasive species removal.

This workshop will have a special focus on Oriental bittersweet, which is a major problem in Backbone State Park and has completely taking over some areas. To help control this troublesome vine, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is conducting some trials on two different plots within Backbone State Park to determine efficiency between chemical treatments and prescribed burns.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to identify, treat and remove invasive species.
  • Discover about how native plants provide more benefits for the environment than non-native plants, including better food and habitat for animals and pollinators.
  • Hear how experts are dealing with invasive plants such as garlic mustard, Japanese barberry, bucktorn, multiflora rose, black locust and Japanese knotweed.

Be sure to wear suitable clothing for outdoor activities and bring a refillable water bottle and bug spray. Our hike will be about one mile on a flat but grass covered surface; motorized assistance is not available. This event will be held rain or shine.
