Iowa Learning Farm Virtual Field Day: Riparian Forest and Wildlife Habitat

Thursday, May 14, 2020 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

May 14 Virtual Field Day: Riparian Forest and Wildlife Habitat

On Thursday, May 14th at 1pm CDT, Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center and Conservation Learning Group, is hosting a free virtual riparian forest and wildlife habitat field day. The event will include video footage from a local riparian forest area and live interaction with Billy Beck, Iowa State University Assistant Professor and Extension Forestry Specialist and Adam Janke, Iowa State University Assistant Professor and Extension Wildlife Specialist.

“These riparian forests represent a powerful tool in Iowa’s water quality effort. However, they are often overlooked and underutilized by agricultural landowners,” said Beck.

Beck’s research and extension programming focuses on the impacts that trees, woodlands, and forests have on water quality and quantity in the Midwest. During the live event, Beck will highlight the water quality and flood mitigation benefits provided by healthy riparian forests, as well as offer tips for managing these areas to achieve maximum environmental and economic returns.

“Riparian forests are critical for many of Iowa’s wildlife,” says Janke. “I’m really excited to bring the virtual field day into these areas to observe some unique wildlife habitats, like dead trees, in-stream habitat, and even a great-blue heron rookery.”

Janke, whose research focuses on bird habitat in farmed Iowa landscapes, will highlight how wildlife use features like riparian areas in agricultural landscapes and lead a discussion on finding other opportunity areas for wildlife conservation in working landscapes.

Don't miss this virtual field day!
